Two Things That You Should Sew Before Working On Larger Projects
Sewing is a popular activity. Sewing is a job for some people while others just love working with the best sewing machine for beginners in their free time. If you bought a sewing machine but you don’t know where to begin, you may read this article and find the answer. Firstly, you have to understand your sewing machine. Reading the instruction carefully is recommended. Reading these documents before using them not only helps you understand the way it works but also prevents operation accidents. Remember to check your sewing machine before every usage.
Before you sew the first seam, make sure the needle and thread are in the right position. In order to sew clothes, you have to begin with the simplest things. You need to practice some basic seams first, which are straight seam, curved seam, and corner seam. After being able to work well with these seams, let’s begin to make something simple.
1. Pillowcase For making a pillowcase, you should choose the fabric that contains at least 70% of cotton in its component.
Step 1: Measure and cut fabric Depending on the size of your pillow, you can measure how much fabric you will use. For example, my pillow’s length is 70cm, so to make a pillowcase using my best basic sewing machine, I took 70 x 2 + 20 = 160cm as the length of the pillowcase. The extra 20cm is used to stuff the pillow inward and keep it tight. My pillow’s width is 50cm and because of the seam’s space, I take 50+2cm for it. Overall, the fabric size to make my pillowcase is 160x52cm. Just cut the fabric off and you are ready to make a wonderful pillowcase.
Step 2: Sew the pillowcase Firstly, you need to sew the “lid” of the pillow. The “lid” is the 20cm-part of the fabric length that you cut in the previous stage. Fold that part of the fabric and sew 2 sides together. Next, we fold the fabric so the edges are aligned and the right sides are touched each other. Finally, sew the rest two sides together. Overturn your finished product and you will have a simply customized pillowcase.
2. Skirt
To sew a skirt, you must have the body measurement. Measurements that need to make a skirt are the hips, waist, and skirt length. Next, you would use these measurements to cut the fabric and elastic. Cut 2 rectangular pieces of fabric according to the number you collected. Next, take the hips measurement, minus one inch, and cut the elastic band by that number. Then, you need to lay the two rectangular fabric pieces on top of each other so that they are even (don’t forget to let their right side meet each other) and sew them together. To add the elastic to the skirt, you need to create the elastic casing to cover it up. To make it, just simply fold over the top ½ inch of the fabric and press it with an iron. And then, continue to fold the fabric by another 2 inches and use stitches to sew this section along the skirt’s body. Remember to leave a 4 inches gap near one of the seams to add the elastic. Finally, pull the cut elastic into the skirt through the loop and use a top stitch to close the opening. Don’t forget to use the backstitch to reinforce the seam before you complete your own skirt. Sewing is such an art activity. Only with a good sewing machine for beginners and materials, you can lift the creativity up and create many fashionable and creative products with fabric. I hope this article will be helpful and you will succeed soon in sewing. |
